Vastu Padas: 64 and 84 Systems
Padas are the grid points within the Vastu Purusha Mandala. Understanding them moves you from general directional guidelines to precise, room-by-room placement.

What is a Pada?
A pada is one square in the Vastu Mandala. In the 64 Pada system, there are 64 squares — each with specific qualities and a ruling deity (see Vastu Devtas).
In traditional Vastu practice, the entrance pada receives the most attention, followed by the bedroom and kitchen padas. Practitioners describe some ruling Devtas as supportive and others as challenging. These are traditional interpretations, not measured outcomes.
Each pada has: a position in the grid, a ruling planet or deity, specific qualities, and remedies if it needs balancing.
The 64 Pada System (8×8 Grid)
The 64-pada system divides your space into 8 columns and 8 rows — 64 individual squares, oriented to the cardinal directions and perfectly symmetrical around both axes. Each of the 8 directions holds 8 padas within its own zone; the four corners hold 4 padas each where two zones meet.
| Direction | Padas | Best for / avoid |
|---|---|---|
| North (Kubera) | 1–16 | Strong: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 — office, entrance, safe/vault (3, 11), cashier counter (2, 3, 10, 11) Avoid: 4, 5, 12, 13 (center-facing) — too central for a main door |
| South (Yama) | 17–32 | Leadership/authority office: 18, 19, 22, 23. Master bedroom if unavoidable: 22, 23 Avoid: Entrance — only specialized (law, government), not ideal for homes |
| East (Indra) | 33–48 | Entrance: 34, 35, 38, 39, 42, 43, 46, 47 (esp. 35, 39). Creative workspace: 34, 35, 38, 39. Study: 38–40, 46–48. Prayer: 40, 48 Avoid: Center-facing 36, 37, 44, 45 |
| West (Varuna) | 49–64 | Bedroom: 50, 51, 54, 55. Guest bedroom: 51, 55, 56, 60. Library/study: 50, 51, 54, 55. Hospitality entrance: 51, 55, 59, 63 Avoid: Primary business entrance — feels welcoming but not energetic |
| Corner | Padas | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast (Brahma) | 40, 48, 56, 64 | Prayer room or altar (esp. 40, 56), main entrance, meditation — every Northeast pada is auspicious |
| Northwest (Vayu) | 8, 16, 56, 64 | Guest bedroom (esp. 16, 56), family gathering space, entrance for service businesses |
| Southeast (Agni) | 33, 41, 24, 32 | Kitchen (esp. 33), active workspace, gym, entrance for restaurants (esp. 24, 33) |
| Southwest (Nairriti) | 17, 25, 49, 57 | Master bedroom (esp. 25, 49), safe / valuables storage, family anchoring (25, 57) |
Center Padas
The center of a 64-pada grid doesn't fall on a single pada — four padas meet at the center (36, 37, 44, 45). These should never have doors or heavy activity; they hold the entire grid in balance. Meditation, reflection, or brief pauses are fine — heavy activity is not.
Using it practically
- Overlay an 8×8 grid on your floor plan, aligned to true North
- See which padas your rooms occupy
- Check alignment against the tables above
- Where misaligned, adjust the energy with color, mirrors, plants, or elements rather than moving the room
- Prioritize one significant change at a time and observe its effect
The 84 Pada System
The 84-pada system is more advanced and specialized — less a simple grid than a configuration based on concentric rings and finer mathematical ratios. Each cardinal direction expands from 8 to 12 padas, and each corner from 4 to 6, with the main 8 Devtas still governing their directions in more granular sub-groups.
It's less commonly used than the 64-pada system, but more precise for detailed new-build or renovation design work — usually applied with expert guidance rather than by a homeowner alone.
